Why pHocus Live-Ball Clinics in Dana Point Are Different
If you’ve played a pHocus Tennis clinic on a Sunday morning, you already know it doesn’t feel like a typical tennis lesson. There’s music playing, the pace never stops, and everyone on the court is locked in and having fun, not standing in line waiting for their turn to hit. That’s Live-Ball, and it’s the format behind why our pHocus Tennis clinics have become the Sunday morning tradition they are.
What is Live-Ball tennis, actually?
Live-Ball tennis started as an answer to a real problem: traditional clinics had gone stale. Structured drills, long lines, lots of standing around, players were drifting off to spin classes and yoga instead. So the format was reimagined from the ground up: continuous play, no long pauses between points, and spontaneity instead of rigid drill sequences. Balls stay in motion, players stay moving, and the whole session runs at a pace that feels more like a workout than a lesson. It’s spread to clubs across the country over the past couple decades because it works, players keep coming back for more, and most of all, it’s FUN!
Why pHocus Tennis Live-Ball clinics are different
A lot of clubs run Live-Ball. Here’s what makes ours the one people show up for week after week:
Level-balanced groups, capped at 10. We keep our two Sunday sessions at 2.5-3.5 and 4.0+ USTA respectively, and cap the group at 10 players, so you’re always playing with people at your level, no mismatched pairings, no one dominating the court.
A real community, not a drop-in class. Most of our Sunday regulars come from our weekly evening live-ball groups or our private lesson roster. It’s a group that knows each other, shows up consistently, and pushes each other to get better.
The music. This one’s personal. We build the energy of every clinic around a lively, upbeat playlist, it’s part of our coaching style, not an afterthought. Players ask for station changes and song requests frequently, because the music is as much a part of the experience as the tennis.
Your playlist
Since the music is such a big part of what makes our Live-Ball clinics so much fun, we’re opening it up: submit your top artist and song (or up to 3) for curating our weekly playlists. Every submission gets a shoutout and a small courtside perk that day, and you’re entered into our live drawing for pHocus Athletic merch and DJ Walkout honors (pick your Live-Ball clinic’s opening song, plus unlimited mulligans and first dibs on the Champions court for your clinic session).
