About Coach Mike Story
Coach Mike Story is an RSPA-certified tennis teaching professional at the Dana Hills Tennis Center in Dana Point, CA. For over two decades, Mike has been a fixture of tennis on the West Coast, developing players with the precision and care that lasting growth requires. As the founder of pHocus Tennis, and later pHocus Athletic™, Mike has built a program rooted in a simple belief: tennis is for everyone, and every player deserves a coach invested in their journey.
Raised along the coast of South Carolina by a single mother, Mike learned early what it meant to work for everything. The youngest of three, he grew up a multi-sport kid, playing baseball, football, and basketball, while discovering surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding; and pretty much anything competitive. Like most of the sports that influenced his mindset, Tennis found him at age 8, and though his path took him through years immersed in surfing and other sports and business ventures, he eventually found his way back to the court in the mid 2000’s, this time as a coach.
Mike’s path hasn’t been without adversity. After the loss of his first son, he raised four step-sons alongside his one remaining son, Jack. Those experiences shaped him in ways competition alone never could. He believes adversity and humility are where real growth happens, and where balance is found.
In the years following the Dot-Com bubble, Mike founded Big Daddy Media, a technology & marketing firm that reflected his creative drive to build something meaningful even in uncertain times. That same entrepreneurial spirit later led him to found pHocus Tennis, and eventually the broader pHocus Athletic™ brand.
Since the age of 16, Mike has pursued surfing, travel, and cultural and language education as part of his own spiritual balance, journeying across the United States, through much of Central America, and across Europe, where he also studied different tennis coaching methods and teaching philosophies – always a student of the game. That global perspective, combined with a genuine love for people and learning from different cultures, shapes the way he connects with every player who steps on the court, no matter where they come from or what their story is.
That same drive to lift others up extends beyond the court. Mike has long been committed to supporting youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds through his work with several private charitable organizations, helping create access to opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. He’s also passionate about protecting the land of his upbringing through several natural conservation and biodiversity focused philanthropic channels in efforts to preserve the Low Country of South Carolina, including Brookgreen Gardens.
Brookgreen Gardens is one of the few institutions in the United States to earn accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, as well as being designated a National Historic Landmark and being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

pHocus Tennis™ is part of the pHocus Athletic™ family, a brand built on Balance, Discipline, Mindfulness, Gratitude, and Respect. Those five pillars aren’t just words on a wall, they’re how Mike coaches. Every lesson blends technical skill-building with the mindset habits that carry players through competition and life alike.
Whether you’re a total beginner, a competitive junior or college player, or a longtime club player looking to sharpen your game, Mike meets you where you are. pHocus Tennis is built to welcome players from all walks of life and skill levels, because community and connection are just as important as the scoreline. Mike also offers advanced, professional-level training for pros looking to refine their game at the highest level. From private lessons to group clinics, the goal is always the same: help people fall in love with the game while growing into stronger, more grounded versions of themselves.
Set against the coastal backdrop of Dana Point, the Dana Hills Tennis Center serves as home base for pHocus Tennis, a gathering place for players who want to improve their game and be part of something bigger.
